It is important to recognise those who are taking action to address climate change and sustainability. Our I’M IN 4 Climate and Sustainability Action initiative will honour and support individuals and organisations that are taking action to address climate change and promote sustainability.
We are using the wolf as our symbol to recognise our climate champions, reflecting Aldo Leopold’s “land ethic” and his powerful wolf analogy. Just as wolves play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, our climate champions exhibit a deep respect and commitment to preserving our natural world. They act on their moral responsibility to respect, protect, and preserve the health, beauty, and integrity of the land and its ecosystems. Our champions efforts embody the interconnectedness of all living things, emphasising the importance of protecting people, communities, and ecosystems.
One of Aldo Leopold’s most cited claims is: “a thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” This definition of environmental ethics broadens our climate champions moral responsibilities to include the land.
Meet one of our Champions in golf – Garth Cusick: Garth’s vision for Eastern Sward Golf Club is a model of sustainability and self- reliance, eliminating dependence on external inputs or outputs. The goal is to transform Eastern Sward GC into a “True stand-alone independent self-regenerative site, generating its own power, soil amendments, and hydration needs – a sustainable and off-grid operation. This involves creating a self-contained ecosystem where all necessary resources are generated, managed, and recycled on-site, ensuring minimal environmental impact and promoting long-term sustainability.
Meet another of our Champions changing the perception of golf sustainability - Robert Biddle: Robert is the Superintendent at Avondale Golf Club in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Robert understands the importance of golf courses showcasing how they benefit not only the members of the golf club but the wider community. He is actively involved in habitat protection and enhancement, managing wildlife corridors, sustainable irrigation and water management, the protection of flora and enhancing biodiversity. His course is also the only Audubon Certified golf course in NSW and is also home to one of the largest microbat communities in northern Sydney.
We invite you to join us in this exciting journey of honoring and empowering climate champions. Together, let us celebrate their remarkable accomplishments and work hand in hand to protect our planet.
